Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Soundboard ban

I am not a Grateful Dead collector. I've actually never really been exposed to them at all. However, I am an audio collector who is mainly interested in Iron Maiden recordings. The Dead always seemed to have the greatest tape trading community around but I recently discovered this site and I read somewhere that The Dead now DO NOT allow the trading of soundboards. Why did this happen and who made this decision? Where does one go to get SBD's now?
Also, if I were to try to sample of live shows, what would be your "top 20" must haves from them?

Oh yeah, there isn't a ban on TRADING SBD's, they just pulled the massive amount of SBD's that were available for FREE download. As much as a huge stink was made of this there are still way more quality recordings of this band - SBD or AUD - than any band in the history of music. There's also more free stuff available from this band than any other I can think of. I cannot think of a more generous band, both in their performances and their business practices regardless of what anyone thinks of them now. Also FWIW on their SBD policies - allmost EVERY current band that makes their living playing live and is widely collected have put a stop to SBD's patches and have done so for a LONG time.

I love audience recordings but I love the idea that Metallica had with being able to buy downloads of their shows in FLAC format and download artwork. However, I think their pricing model is quite steep for a download at $12.95 per show. I think a lot of bands should follow suit but reconsider the prices. I would be more apt to buy an entire tour of some of my favorite bands if the price was in the $4-$7 range.

if metallica is 12.95 per show - that is actually cheap - most bands are selling their boards at about $17 per show in snh/flac format. kudos to metallica for keeping their price down (and i am no fan of that band) - more bands need to follow suit - $17 is ridiculous - $12 is more like it.

Wow! I always looked at it this way: Bands could sell a double CD in a retail store for as little as $13 and usually around $18, why would a download be so darn expensive.

The label/band etc miss out on having to pay:
Physical duplication of discs and artwork
Paying a distributor
Selling at wholesale

I would think it would be cheaper. I would think that downloads would be more popular if they were cheaper.

lol, I wish I was rich.

i gotta agree with you david - i dont get it either. we have to buy the blanks, get "inferior" downloads (even shn isnt factory cd quality) - have the pc to download it - and it still costs us more than the $13 double album/cd you mentioned. i am wondering the same thing.

How is shn "not factory cd quality"?

Don't even bother answering, shn has nothing to do with the quality of the sound whatsoever.

really???? not sure you know what you are talking about. no offense man - shn may be lossless, but it aint factory cd quality. sorry to disappoint ya - trust me i aint complaining about this site - and yes, i know, the digitalsoundboard.net releases are a bit better than the shn/flac files. not sure what you are saying though - please explain.

It kinda depends how well you photograph or scan the book, but lossless means nothing is tossed from the sample. And sampling from a master tape is better if that's what you mean.

And higher sampling rates are better than lower, and better equipment and better adjustments etc. and endless cetera,

it's just a meaningless thing to say 'shn is not factory cd quality'

there is just no meaning whatsoever to the statement.

It sounds like someone from some cd factory trying to make it seem that their commercial cds are capable of producing better sound than shortened sound files can produce. Which is not in any sense or by any stretching of the English language a true statement.

Which is why I said don't even bother answering way back then when this was fresh.

But even Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh fans should understand that archiving a file to .zip doesn't lose information. Flac might be preferred because it is faster and makes smaller files.

F - Metallica! No offense but to me they are the poster band for a band that was once hungry and mean and is now fat and greedy. They used to be cool with trading stuff in their LEAN days from what I understand then as soon as they become Millionaires they get so greedy they go after their actual FANS hard drives looking to press charges. They could have put a little more effort into some quality merchandising or other frindge benefits for their fans but instead went about it the way they did. I really have no respect for middle aged married with children millionaires prentending they still have an edge. What's left to be angry about?

Hope this doesn't piss anyone off.

Oh I agree with that. 15.99 for a DL is ridiculous. It'd make more sense to charge a monthly subscription. Personally I think if the goal is to make $ on their legacy they should act on it FAST and they should start releasing long overdue things like Sunshine Daydream on DVD. They should release all the vintage video they have regardless of quality. I want to see way more from Winterland 74. What about that Europe 72 Tivoli video? I KNOW theres more video out there. I guess we'll see what Rhino has up their sleeve. If they're doing another Aoxomoxoa it better have not only the instrumental Dark Star but also Barbed Wire Whipping Party!

You know, i have no problem with small market groups like SKB or Garaj Mahal charging a few extra bucks for downloads... but the dead, cmon. Kimock deserves some extra cash - how he isn't bigger in "the scene" is beyond me. I got no problem payin for him, but the dead, ratdog, phil (sorry phil) - 17.99 is a joke. I'll buy 5 kimock shows before i purchase one dead show (of course ive got hunreds already on disc, i dont need more - hahah bobby - you lose) - damn im an asshole :)

I agree with you there. Steve deserves to be a lot bigger and I know we both agree on that. Look at how hot Phils first few lineups were and why is that? It's pretty damn obvious now I think. It sucks for me though because those AK Kimoock shows were about the most special thing I've seen since the GRATEFUL Dead and I'm quite certain he won't be back because the venue didn't sell enough tickets and lost money. Pisses me off.

absolutely man Kimock is just unreal - how he isn't more popular is beyond me. - dont know if you have Phil's commercial release "And Love Will See You Through" - if you dont - get it (or i will burn and send it to you - seriously - no B&P) between Phil, Jorma, and Steve - that is one of my favorite live discs ever. Steve's jam in "Good Shepherd" is enough to bring tears to your eyes. Never mind the mind numbing 40 minute Caboose>St Stephen. the Dancin in the Street and Mr Charlie are jawdropping too. Let me know if you dont have it - will send it to you - you will love it!!!!! Cant say enough about that release.

I allways wanted that one. I've heard it on streaming but I'd love to hear the SBD. First of all I'm a huge Hot Tuna/Jorma fan. Even if Jorma isn't the greatest from an improv standpoint he's still great. I like Pete Sears too, I was even pulling for him to get Brent's spot even though I think the Dead would have probably drowned him. Second, New Potato Caboose! How cool is that? I love that tune. I'd love to have this!

You know which other lineup I loved was with Dave Nelson. THAT is a cool band. I really dig them alot.

Also go here >>

and find a year you like, and review the shows by avg rating. The first 20 in each decade is a winner i suspect.
What's your favorite Iron maiden show?

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll check them out.

My favorite Maiden shows:

1999 Milwaukee. It was played in a small venue and the existing recordings are excellent. The band was tight and it was full of energy.

1985 Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates. My first concert, so its a personal favorite.

1979-09-10. Very early line-up with a different drummer (Doug Sampson) and guitar player (Tony Parsons). Very early renditions of to-be classics. Its cool to hear early arrangements of songs that wouldn't be formally recorded for another 3 years.

2 landmark shows to start off with are barton hall may 77 and NJ meadowlands march 90 with marsalis. Both are considered to be in the top 5 the band has played and are from different eras so you can get a sense of the sound from both time periods.

Also try the 3 nights at apline valley in the summer of 89.

go to google and in quotes, just like this, type

"Top 20 grateful dead shows"

THe first or second hit will bring you to a web site something to the effect of Phatasytours.com/dead- at that site are best of lists broken out by time periods- and the time periods are broken out somewhat by different "eras" of the band or major changes in personnel.

I hear there is a way to actually download those MP-3 and VBR streams. One advantage to this, would be the ability to hear a show in WinAmp with no 2 second gaps in the jams. And then dump those lossy files.

Forget about trying to download the lossless files here; because they don't even appear on those pages any more! I know of six other places where you can still download SBDs of the Grateful Dead any many more artists quietly. No need to start another big war over this Archive...

no kidding man - trading has been workin pretty damn well within a certain group of us so far. much more fun and much less disrespectul - and what has it cost us - 5 bucks or so per package?? chump change for the great trading and personal interaction.
i still say, that in one way, the pulling of the boards has been a blessing. i would never have "met" some cool folk if those boards were still up. Bobby may have said "see ya", but that has led to me to say "hello" to some good people.

Just tell the postal person its cds and ask to price it at media rate (they ship at a rate like libraries use). Sent a whole stack of 50 discs from St. Louis to LA for about $5. 3-6 depending on distance is like 1.25.
